Sandi Hayes

Professor Sandi Hayes is a Senior Research Fellow at the Menzies Health Institute Queensland, with expertise in epidemiology and exercise science. Dr Hayes leads a cancer survivorship program of research which seeks to explore cancer survivorship concerns, with a focus on lymphoedema, and to evaluate the role of physical activity, including exercise, post-cancer. To date, she has conducted prospective, longitudinal cohort studies in breast and gynaecological cancer, as well as over 20 clinical trials evaluating exercise in breast, blood, brain, gynaecological and mixed cancer groups.

Her research has attracted over $10M in grant funding and been published in >120 peer-reviewed journal articles. Dr Hayes lead the authorship team for Exercise and Sports Science Australia’s exercise and cancer position stand, was a member of the working group that developed the international exercise and cancer guidelines (2018-19, American College of Sports Medicine), developed 6 exercise and cancer factsheets for the international Exercise is Medicine Initiative, and is a scientific advisory member for the Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group, Queensland Centre for Gynaecological Cancer research, Cancer Council Queensland and the International Society of Lymphology.

Dr Hayes remains committed to improving the lives of those with cancer through the conduct of high-quality research and mentoring of emerging scientists.
